CONSULTANCY: THE MIRROR, THE WINDOW AND THE DOOR

Vipul Oberoi
In the intricate dance of business, owners often find themselves at crossroads, striving for growth and yet grappling with challenges and uncertainty. It is at this juncture that a consultant steps in; not as a magician with a wand, but as a trusted guide, illuminating the path forward. Their role, multifaceted and profound, can be best understood through the powerful metaphors of the mirror, the window, and the door. These are not poetic constructs; they represent the core functions of a consultant: reflecting reality, envisioning the future, and charting the course for transformation.
The Consultant as a Mirror: Reflecting Reality
In the daily grind of operations, it is easy for owners to develop blind spots. They become so immersed in the minutiae that they lose sight of the bigger picture, or even the fundamental truths about their own enterprise. The Owner tends to start owning everything and the CEO tends to become the Chief Everything Officer.
The first and arguably most crucial role of a consultant is to act as an honest mirror, held up to the organization and its leadership. Holding the “mirror” means deep-diving into the current state of the business. It involves meticulously analysing financial statements, operational processes, market positioning, organizational culture, and team dynamics. The consultant asks probing questions, gathers data, conducts interviews, and observes interactions – all with the sole purpose of constructing an accurate and unfiltered reflection of the present reality.
What does this reflection reveal?
It might expose inefficiencies that have been overlooked for years.
Highlight untapped strengths that are being underutilized.
Brings to light internal opposing forces, such as misalignment between the company's stated values and actual practices, or a disconnect between leadership's perception of customer satisfaction and the customers' true experiences.
The reflection might not always be flattering, and it can challenge deeply held assumptions. However, this discomfort is a necessary catalyst for change. Without an honest understanding of the present, any attempt to move forward will be built on shaky ground. It's about saying, "This is what is," allowing for acceptance and the readiness to evolve.
The Consultant as a Window: Opening to the Future
Once the current reality has been clearly established through the mirror, the consultant's role shifts to that of opening a window – one that offers a panoramic vista of the future. This is not about crystal ball gazing but about:
Strategic foresight, market intelligence, and innovative thinking
Bringing external perspectives and benchmarks.
Scenario planning and strategic visioning.
Helping define and articulate the North Star metrics.
Facilitating discussions that explore various future possibilities.
Helping owners articulate their aspirations and define what success looks like in a future state.
Challenging existing paradigms, and identifying opportunities for differentiation and sustainable growth.
The consultant helps owners see beyond their own four walls, revealing a world of potential and different ways of operating. This "window" provides not just a glimpse but a comprehensive view of potential futures. It is about asking "what could be?" and then painting a compelling picture of that desired future.
The Consultant as a Door: Leading Through Transformation
With reality reflected in the mirror and the future envisioned through the window, the consultant's final and most actionable role is to act as a door – a gateway to the path of transformation and growth. This door represents the concrete strategies, action plans, and implementation guidance necessary to bridge the gap between the present reality and the desired future. It is no longer about situation (mirror) or vision (window); it is about active leadership and execution (door).
This roadmap is not a vague set of suggestions but:
A precise, step-by-step plan that outlines the necessary changes, allocates resources, defines responsibilities, and sets measurable milestones
Translates the strategic vision into actionable initiatives, breaking down complex objectives into manageable tasks.
Recommending organizational restructuring, implementing new technological solutions, developing new product lines, or initiating cultural change programs.
Involving various stakeholders in project management, training, facilitating difficult conversations, and monitoring progress.
Opening and leading through this door requires empowering the organization to step through the threshold of change, providing the necessary support to ensure they not only reach their destination but also develop the internal capabilities to continue evolving independently.
In essence, the consultant's journey with a client is a holistic one: first, they hold up the mirror, allowing for self-awareness and an honest confrontation with the present.
